step by step help combining picture

Hi all photoshop gurus.
I need help in combining both picture to become one using photoshop. The width of each part separated equally. The picture in this post is just an example. I need step by step tutorial to apply to my other picture. Thanks.

take the two pictures, make the canvas size bigger
now use the rectangle selection tool, set size
cut-paste the sections to separate layers and arange them as you wish.

Thanks for a quick reply chrisix. I tried what u wrote but i dont know how to set the size for the rectangle selection tool. Sorry I'm really new wtih photoshop.

I'm certain there may be easier ways to accomplish this, but this is my take on it!
