What looks better and why? What could we do with these photos in photoshop?

The second one has the potential to look better if the color temperature is corrected. Or even B&W.
Mainly, because it doesn't have head-on, on-camera flash like the first one.

And I'd sharpen it a few pixels.

I personally like the second one better. The light in the first one is too harsh for my taste. I like the nice shadow in the second one and how the lighting isn't too harsh.

I think a combination of the whiteness from the first one and the shadows in the second one would look nice.
Something similar to this, maybe?

I used a curves adjustment, duplicated the layer and set it to soft light, and applied a gradient map.

I'm no expert, though! Hope some others chime in with their advice as to what would look good.

The whole thing looks way under lit ..small camera flash...I'm gonna get this whole picture balanced and lit correctly...then I will play with it. did a few layers in raw....then I blew the contrast out more to come I was thinking a Christmas card.....bbb-as-Smart-Object-1.jpg

eh... the more I look at my 1st attempt, the less I like it. In addition, I'm really not that wild about the starting composition / content, so maybe a soft, painted treatment would de-emphasize it and allow it to be used as a generic image (with overlaid text) for a card.

PS - I just finished all the work that was due this week, so I can play again :-)
