White Background Removal

Hi Everyone,

I am new to photoshop obviously, and am having trouble. I am able to remove the background from my picture just fine, but cannot figure out how to save the image so that I can paste it into a new background later. I first open the picture, remove the background using the background removal tool, then save as PNG or either PSD. When I open it to use the image, it has a white squared background. How do I get rid of it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am using Adobe Photoshop 7.0. Thanks in advance.

Even if the new doc BG contents are checked white not transparent, if the BG is unlocked and a transparency created, PS will preserve the transparency . . . unless that is different in PS 7. I used PS 6 but always used a transparent BG so IDK.

Maybe you could post the psd, as it is before you erase the background, and another after you erase the BG.

There are a number of possibilities and unless we get into an involved discussion, we may not stumble across what is happening.

Thanks everyone... I tried it again and yet it gives me the white background :( So like I said, I open the document, click on the background remover tool and clean up the background. Thats literally all I do before I save. Am I missing a step somewhere?

My apologies, here it is thank you so much for your help! I also loaded a copy of the png with the background removed. I know, its not very well cleaned up at this point I was just testing to see if it would even work. :)

I masked off the background using the quick selection tool. I don't like the background eraser for this. I saved and closed the psd. When I opened it, it was still transparent. So, if you are having a problem, it is not due to what PS should do.

What, by the way are the 2nd and 3rd layer for?

You might try the following. I don't know if it works for this problem, assuming something is wrong with the Program. These are things I have copied and pasted for you which come from our mods and gurus.

How to reset Photoshop preferences:
First, hold down all three Ctrl+Alt+Shift buttons; On a Mac, hold Command+Option+Shift
Now "while keeping those button held," simply open Photoshop or a file that opens with Photoshop
As Photoshop loads, you should get a prompt asking if you would like to "delete the Photoshop settings file", Click yes
You should now have a fresh slate with all of the settings returned to their default.

Make sure you have the most current Video card driver.
If you're up to date try turning off (un-check) Enable OpenGL Drawing if it's set to on.

Ctrl+K to get to Preferences then Performance|GPU Settings

You have two layers with nothing in/on them.
Take your first layer and copy it, then remove your background BUT turn off layer one first - THEN save the background removed layer as PNG file, i think your flattening the images - also when you save as a PNG are you checking the 'interlaced' button, if so DON'T leave it set at NONE.

Thanks for your help! I will definitely try this tonight when I get home on a home computer to see if I get different results than here at work.
