Hello Simon and welcome to PSG.

Sorry that there have not been any replies on your thread. Sunday evenings are usually fairly slow around here.

It looks like you have figured it out.

sure here goes.

create text layer
create new layer and fill with bg colour
then in text layer, magic wand the text then remove that from new layer.
then copy this layer. the new copy layer i extrude from selected area and bevel etc.

the first original copy I render on its own and then the new copy, i then render on its own.

its just a little messy on the edges

Well, it's not an effect that's usually used with the 3D function.

Here's one way to do it...........I hope to find a better way!!!

What your trying to do is to cut out the text from a block and make it look 3D.
Here's the block..

Here's the text on the block...

Here's the text removed from the block.

Here's the block after a 3D extrusion.

These never render correctly and usually look terrible.

Hi Sam, I'm not sure I understand what the problem is.
I assume the goal is to make an 'inward' extrusion like this

Untitled-1.png

I simply used PS 3D but disabled the shadows and used a rounded bevel.

To make it somewhat easier prepare your letterbox in advance, you know, make background and cut out the letters, then save it as an PNG.
- Load that PNG and duplicate it. Fill the copy completely with the choosen color (it will be the 'backwall-postcard)
- Make the extrusion fron the PNG layer (depth at choice) and choose a bevel frame

Untitled-1.jpg

In this case I chose a rounded bevel with the specification in the picture (depends what size the image is ect...)

Untitled-2.jpg

Make a 'postcard' from the copy and make it fit on the back of the letter layer - make it also a bit darker

Disable shadows in the scene menu (too crowded with shadows)

Untitled-3.jpg

Hit render, and wait (depending on your system)

Untitled-4.jpg

When finished rendering go to the essential workspace.
Select the 3D object (CTRL+J) to make a copy of it and untick the original 3D layer (moving anything in that layer will cause losing the rendering!)

In this case I used some Topaz filters but the original was good.

Thanks Eggy, I knew I had seen a way to do this using the 3D engine but I could not find it last night!
