Hi guys,
I'm trying to make a lightning strike in photoshop CS 5 but when I use difference clouds like in this tutorial

I'm not getting the same look.

Honestly If I want lightning bolts I just load a set of lightning brushes
Lightning Brushes by ~Scully7491 on deviantART
and incase you dont know how to instal brushes

Welcome to PhotoShop Gurus

Just remember if you paint them on a new layer then duplicate that layer (control +J) set the top copy layer blending mode to screen and the bottom copy if you right click it and select blending options you can add an outer glow to it for some real creative effects.

This is a common way to do this.
The next step is to invert the image (Ctrl+I or Cmd+I on a Mac) then use levels.
