Photoshop CS6 serial number not accepted

Hello,
I am a newbie here and I apologize in advance if this is not properly worded or entered in the wrong place, etc.

I use a MacBook Pro, late 2011 edition with OSX Yosemite version 10.10.5

I legally purchased Adobe Creative Suite Premium with Photoshop CS6 awhile ago. I used it briefly without problems, but then had family emergencies and later it wouldn't work. I tried and tried but eventually went back to using CS5 which still works.
I am trying now to reload CS6 again and I keep getting invalid serial number messages. I did online chat and they told me that CS6 is no longer supported and I can't load it again. Is this true? I saw on the Adobe forums that many people seem to be reloading CS6. I can't even get on their forum anymore. Where should I look for a solution if there is any?

Was this an upgrade from CS5, if that's the case as far as I know you have to enter your serial key for CS5 first

You can sign into the forum with your Adobe ID, which would be your registered Adobe email and password

it wasn't an upgrade. I bought at a school bookstore for a class. I don't know if that's considered a reseller or not.
