Sink logo into background

Hi!

I am working on an app for my school, and I need to get the school logo to sink into the background like the Apple logo does here:


I Googled around for some guides, but all I could find was a lousy guide about creating a "sand effect" on some text. Following that guide got me kind of close the final result, but it doesn't look totally right.

Can someone please help me make it right? A explanation or a guide would be awesome!

That gave me some inspiration...

I attached an updated version which I am very happy with.
("Sundsgymnasiet" is the name of my school)

Does it look OK?
