Help with Logo Image

Hi,

Many years ago (can't remember how many) I was asked to create a logo. We found a suitable photo image and used the Lasso tool to cut an image of a car. The logo we made was great at the time as it was fairly small and it was used exclusively for web and print newsletter, until now.

We were recently asked to prepare this logo to be used on a large banner to be displayed at the race events. So I found the original png file (1269X445 pixel) and re-did the text on it thinking it would be OK for this large banner. However when the Printing Shop tried to use the image they said it was very grainy when "blown up" and was unusable.

The problem was the original photo we took the car out of was taken on a standard 35mm camera and was then digitized when the film was taken to a kodak lab and copied to CD. The total size of the whole photo was 835KB. I would class the original image as a little grainy.

We need to get this image to a high enough resolution to print this banner. We thought about maybe using a paint bucket fill and making two colours which did not go well. The edges were jagged.

We were looking for some advice on how to either convert this car to two solid colours (Black and red) or improve the image quality. I am using Photoshop CS5. Attached is the PNG we are working with. Any help, advice or appraisal is greatly appreciated.

I think What I would do is increase the resolution to about 900 Duplicate
top layer use Gaussian Blur.very little maybe .5px give or take change the top layer mode layer mode to a suitable look merge then trim edges using pentool > then create the document sixe you need and place your new image in it transforming it to the size to fit.just a thought but should help

I would increase the resolution with Bicubic set to Smoother.
Duplicate the layer and sharpen one of the layers.
Since sharpening will introduce a lot of unwanted noise I would use a layer mask to hide the sharpened layer and selectively sharpen things like the number and grill on the side of the car, the chrome wheels and decals, etc.

Thanks so much for the prompt and helpful replies I appreciate it. I tried some the recommendations and we will see if the printing house is happy this time

Cheers
