Motion Effect in Madden

These effects are seriously sick. How do ea made it?
I know they used motion blur on a duplicate layer and probably mask it and brush. I just wanna know how they bring out the shadows and make it black? Curves?

How did they isolate and bring out the shadows, then make them darker (black).

1 Original
2 I copied the player 2 times with top layer on color and second layer on multiply
3 with dodge and burn I darkened the shadows
4 with extra layer on soft light I brushed with white to lighten the face and biceps
5 i merged all vissible layers and used filter highpass (10px) and put this layer on soft light
