Vector Edititing in CS3 - merging paths

I've been working with a set of styles to make windows icons - Token, to be exact - and was trying to take a line of text and "knock it out" of the square tile in another layer, which would involve adding the converted paths from the text to the paths of the square to make the "hole." I want the file to be as scalable as possible, and it sounds like a simple task. But I don't have any clue how to go about pulling this off, or if it is even possible. It ought to be, but I can't find any way about it for the life of me.

See if any of these will help: https://www.google.com/#q=Photoshop+combining+paths

This worked well for me on paths.

  1. Click on one of your paths in the paths palette. Copy it (Edit>Copy or Cmd/Ctrl+C).
  2. Then click on another path in the paths palette and paste the first path into it (Edit>Paste or Cmd/Ctrl+V).
  3. Both your paths will be on the same path.
  4. Continue until all of your paths are in the same path.

This is how you would combine shapes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hdl3ulpU94k

Great! Had a bit of difficulty figuring out the knockout, but I have it now. Searched google for how to apply it as a vector mask, and everything is working as intended. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
