Hey Everyone! I'm a newbie here but I'll give it a go!

Since a lot of the other posts have resulted in answers, hopefully you can help me aswell. I'm wondering how I create this effect (picture provided). For all I know it's based from sedimentary stone that later on turned out like this.

Are u saying that u think this might be scientific, not artistic in origin?

I'm not certain it is or based on a sedimentary rock/stone formation at all. I think it's just an effect. I've been wrong before.

Where did this image come from?

Might not even notice that it's based from sedimentary rock. It's an effect that the artist made. But for all i know it's a photography of sedimentary rock that started all this.

The image is a cover for an album!

Haha, sorry for confusion. It's something artistic made, but I know that it was a photograph of sedimentary stone to start with.

I'm sorry for asking, but how do you know this? Where can I find any information about this image?

nono, I mailed the company but all they knew was that it was based from a picture of sedimentary stone. I don't have any other information except that.

I don't even know if you need the original photograph to create this effect!

OK. Although I'm almost positive this pattern was not done by simple application of these two commercial (ie, $$$) plugins, if all you are looking for is the general look, these two will get you close:

#1 Alpha Plugin's "Engraver":

http://www.alphaplugins.com/products/products.php?menu=get_prod_id&p_menustate=&prod_id=2

#2 - Van der Lee's "Halftone":

http://www.vanderlee.com/plugins_halftone.html

http://www.vanderlee.com/plugins_halftone_screenshots.html

In both, note that many different spirals, circles, phase shifts, etc. are available as options

Obviously, one can enhance the results by using the output of one of these as input to the other, having different but related patterns in different areas using layer masks, etc.

That being said, there are fairly well known optical techniques used in microscopy, biomechanics, Ophthalmology, etc. to measure the shape of surfaces that produce patterns like these (see links below). Because the patterns seem to follow the three dimensional shape of the underlying material, I am suspicious that one of these physical techniques might have either been used as the starting point, or served as inspiration for this.

Dirty hands, record label! ...

Ahh, now I understand why you couldn't get more technical info out of them.

Let us know how it goes.

PS - I like Chris's idea to start with a similar image. Applying one of the plugins I mentioned to that image should be really interesting.

Here's what u can get in 2 minutes starting with Chris' image, and then using VanDerLee's "Halftone" plugin + a bit of local area equalization using Topaz Adjust5

Enjoy.

For some reason, this effect is holding my interest. Here's another take on it. This time, I made a displacement map based on brightness, then used the displacement filter.
